Prairie Dog's Shadow

Once numbered in the hundreds of millions – maybe even over 1 billion – and were possibly the most abundant mammal in North America.
Now due to eradication by humans, and loss of habitat, their numbers are closer to 10-20 million.

So whats it mean when the Prairie Dog sees its Shadow??
