Canoe on Lake O'Hara
While hiking in September in Yoho National Park, I came upon this stunning scene. Fresh snow had fallen overnight, whitening the high mountains and conifer forest, but Lake O'Hara was not cold enough to freeze. The red canoe was the only spot of brilliant color in an essentially black-and-white scene, and it had the emotional impact of saying that the seasons were changing, and human lives would be changing as well. Also, the canoe represents a place and time of solitude and peace that is not easily captured in our hectic lives. It is among my best photographs, with a graphic punch and emotional resonance.
